Boyd Charter was born and raised in Billings, Montana the gateway to the Rocky Mountains.  Raised with a rich heritage of western living, this background influences his artwork, from his subjects, to the western look and style of the pieces.  After years of working with natural stone, he developed this unique art form. 

" I admire the Byzantium  Mosaics of Ancient Greece and Rome, the ornate detail and craftsmanship,  but i wanted to do works that represented the west- rugged, textured, and at the same time I wanted them to have a contemporary feel, one that could make them fit into a modern lifestyle. "

"I have always had a love and appreciation for the natural beauty of Montana and its resources.  This appreciation was passed down  from my Grandmother- who was a living conservationist and fierce defender of Montana's natural resources, to my father who helped me see the artistry in creation from  the rocks and soil of our ranch, to the streaked paint brushed stokes of a Montana sunset ."

" When I select the stone for my art, I recognize that every piece is in effect  artwork in itself- created from hundreds of years of weather, minerals, and time.  I am just a collector of the artwork of creation."

Sketching the beginning  design

 Hundreds of pieces of stone may be used in each piece.  Each section of stone is chosen for its unique texture and color to represent shading and details of the image.
